It is the capital of Fuerteventura since 1860. This place was formally known with the name "Puerto Cabras", probably because the Tetir- farmers kept their flocks to graze and drink water here.
We can say that the history of this city council begins early when the pens of goats were joined by houses of fishermen.
In 1925 the so-called Puerto Cabras, joined the municipalities of Tetir and Casillas del Ángel and was renamed in 1056 for the current Puerto del Rosario.
With an area of 290 km2 extending from coast to coast on the island and gathers the villages Tesjuaje, Puerto Lajas, Llanos de la Concepción, Tefia, El Matorral, Garcia Escamez, La Asomada, La Ampuyeta, La Mantilla and Guisguey.
The city of Puerto del Rosario projects a younger image and spirit of modernity, it is here we find the buildings of public service and the greatest cultural offerings.
During the year there are many events and activities of cultural interest in the several exhibition halls and museums.
A point to emphasize in the city is its promenade, which links the port with the city, the tour presents a number of sculptures and is called "Parque Escultórico y Marítimo"(sculptural and marine park).
The city offers an interesting and varied range of comercial and leisure attractions, shopping malls with famous european brands, supermarkets, cinemas, restaurants etc.
The economy of the town hall is based on services, trade and construction. Agriculture and livestock are every day less relevant.
