Fuerteventura

With a distance between the north and south coast of about 100km and a size of 1660km2 , it is the largest of the seven Canary islands and the second biggest after Tenerife. Furthermore it is the lessest explored of all the islands and last but not least the one that concentrates the highest porcentage of native population which explains why traditions are specially taken care of here.

Fuerteventura is an island of contrasts. Gorgeous beaches of fine white sand and turquoise water, lava fields, mountains, valleys, palm groves, traditional villages and freely kept goats make its landscape unique and a kind of magical.

Fuerteventura is located between 28º 45' 04'' and 28º 02' 16'' of 24 12 of Northern latitude and 13º 49' 12'' and 14º 30' 24'' of Eastern longitude.

There are many different theories about the history of formation of the Canary Archipelago and so of Fuerteventura, all of them agreeing in a volcanic origin.

The latest theories are based on the assumption that volcanic eruptions and the pression between the African and Atlantic plate, resulting in the elevation of the oceanic crust, were the reason of origin of the formation of the Canary Archipelago.

While being caracterized by open spaces, wide fields and gorgeous beaches, Fuerteventura is not known for huge heights. The highest point of the island is the Pico de la Sarza of about 807 mts above sea level, situated on the peninsula of Jandia in the South of Fuerteventura. This is followed by the Betancuria massif the highest point of which is the Pico de la Atalaya (672 mts).
